The high school softball season began on Monday and North Greene might have experienced a basketball hangover.
The Chuckey-Doak Lady Knights blanked the Lady Huskies 10-0 in the cross-county matchup to start the season.
"Chuckey-Doak has a good ball club," said Berry Carter, North Greene's head coach. "We are a bunch of young kids out here."
Tiffany Bowman was dominate in earning the win for Chuckey-Doak. She allowed two hits in five innings of work. Bowman struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
"We are blessed with good pitchers in every grade," said Chuckey-Doak head coach Gene Ward. "Tiffany Bowman pitched very well."
The Lady Knights collected 10 hits and scored in three of the six innings played. The big inning was the fourth when Chuckey-Doak sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times.
Jennifer Stetser doubled to left to get the rally going. Katie Adams singled to move Stetser to third. She scored when North Greene threw to second base on a passed ball.
Ashlyn Taylor drove in the next two runs with a double to center. Taylor scored on a groundout. Hannah Riddle followed that with a double of her own. Christian Ward singled to drive Riddle home with the final run of the inning.
The big inning drove North Greene's starter - Megan Taylor - from the game. She had held the Lady Knights to one run through four innings.
Chuckey-Doak finished the game by scoring four runs in the sixth inning to reach the 10-run mercy rule. North Greene contributed to scoring by committing three errors in the inning.
The first two batters for the Lady Knights reached on errors in the infield. Ward then singled in Bowman. Kayla Kyker collected two RBI with a double to center.
Another error and two consecutive walks completed the contest.
Coach Ward said the scoring by his Lady Knights was a result of changing his lineup.
"No real adjustments in their hitting," Ward said. "Just adjustments with the lineup."
Ward said the bottom of the lineup got the team rolling and then the top of the lineup came through as well.
Despite getting blanked at the plate, coach Carter was pleased with his team. The team has not been practicing as a full squad due to the success of the basketball team.
"I am trying to fit them in," Carter said about the basketball players. "They have not had a chance to practice. This was sort of a tryout for them."
The two players for North Greene to collect hits were Dakota White and Mikaela Pridemore.
Leading the hitting for Chuckey-Doak was Christian Ward with three hits. Ashlyn Taylor added two hits in the win.
