Each of Greeneville's last five Sub-State appearances has resulted in a trip to the state tournament.
The Lady Devils hope to keep that streak alive with a win tonight at Christian Academy of Knoxville.
Greeneville earned a trip to the state tournament for five straight years from 2003-2008 in Class AAA. The Lady Devils missed out on Sub-State last year, but are back in the Sweet 16 this year playing for the first time in Class AA.
No matter the size of the school, though, at this time of year every team can play.
"Every team now is good," said Greeneville coach Stacia Crumbley. "(CAK has) a good post player and a good guard. As far as matching up, I think we will match up better with them than we would have Austin-East. I think as far as that is concerned we'll be fine."
CAK won the Region 2 championship with a 62-57 win over Austin-East. Greeneville has to play on the road by virtue of finishing second to South Greene in Region 1.
Just like in Wednesday night's 54-48 championship game loss, the Lady Devils will be without starting point guard Chandler Christopher, who is out with an injury.
Crumbley said Greeneville has focused on filling the gap the last couple of days.
"I think we were a little unsure of ourselves the first half which I thought would happen," the coach said about Greeneville's first game without Christopher bringing the ball up the floor. "I would expect CAK to press us quite a bit because they will know our point guard is out. We have worked on that in practice to feel more comfortable with the press. If we can break the press and get on a half court game, I have more confidence that we can win."
Senior Brianna Kelley took over the point guard responsibilities in the region championship game and did a good job to give Greeneville a chance to win. Sophomore Betsy Shaw was thrown into the starting mix to fill the gap.
Morgan Shipley will be called upon to score from the outside for the Lady Devils, but the key for Greeneville is going to be getting the ball inside to Rainey Story and Samantha Fender.
"I think our strength will be our post play," Crumbley said. "If we can get the ball inside, that will be an advantage for us."
While Greeneville has the advantage of a veteran group that has been to Sub-State before, CAK is making its first ever appearance in the Sweet 16.
Coach Steve Denny said hopefully not only getting to play in Sub-State for the first time but getting to host the big game in their own gym will give the Lady Warriors an edge.
"We have exceeded our expectations I guess," Denny said of the Region 2 champions. "We've reached a lot of firsts for our school. There is a lot of excitement and momentum behind that. We are looking forward to an exciting night but not overlooking a tough opponent."
CAK has a "pretty balanced team" Denny said.
Alesha Hammaker, Brittany Hoffman, Bekah Bennett and Kelsey Brown on "any given night can score double digits," the coach noted.
Christian Academy of Knoxville brings a 26-2 record into tonight's Sub-State contest.
Game time is 7 p.m.
To get to Christian Academy of Knoxville, take the Cedar Bluff exit off Interstate 40 in west Knoxville. Take a left on Ducktown Road and the school is approximately a half-mile on the left.
