GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Allen Johnson raced his way into two NHRA Pro Stock semifinals this weekend, losing both to reigning champion Mike Edwards.
Eliminations for the Phoenix race two weeks ago had to be completed Saturday in Gainesville. After a first round win over Larry Morgan, Johnson defeated Jason Line in the second round before problems forced an aborted run against Edwards in the semis. Edwards went on to win the event.
As for the Gatornationals, Johnson qualified fourth and beat Shane Gray in the first round and topped V. Gaines in the second round, setting up his second semifinal against Edwards in as many days.
Johnson and Edwards cut identical .032 lights, but Edwards clocked a 6.564 to Johnson's 6.596 for the win. Edwards lost to Line in the finals.
Johnson has reached the semifinals in all three national events so far this season, sitting high in the points standings
"It's a case of, 'We're happy, but then we're not happy,'" said Johnson. "We've been to three straight semis, we're second in points leaving here, and we've got to be happy with that. But we have to figure out a way to outrun Mike. We'll see if we can't catch him at the next race in Charlotte."
Tony Schumacher defeated Antron Brown for the Top Fuel win. Tim Wilkerson outran Bob Tasca in Funny Car, and Eddie Krawiec beat Shawn Gann in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
