NASHVILLE -- Greeneville senior Ashley Ellenburg paced a group of five local cross country runners that earned All-State honors here on Saturday.

Ellenburg ran a time of 20:38.03 on the 5K Steeplechase Course at Percy Warner State Park to finish third in the TSSAA Class A/AA Cross Country Championship.

"It wasn't what I expected; it was better. I'm really happy," Ellenburg said.

Teammate Paige Bible also earned All-State honors finishing fifth.

In the boys' race, Greeneville's Dylan Jones placed fifth, Chuckey-Doak's David Cooper finished 10th and Greeneville's Wesley King finished 15th to garner All-State honors.

Chuckey-Doak's boys placed fourth as a team with a combined time of 1:31:10.97 and an average time of 18:21.24.

Greeneville's boys placed fifth with a time of 1:32:32.25 and a 18:30.45 average.

The Lady Devils placed seventh as a team with a 1:55:12.57 and a 23:11.58 average. West Greene finished eighth in the girls team competition, recording a 1:59:12.57 and a 23:50.52 average over the 5,000-meter course.

As for Ellenburg, this was her fourth trip to the state cross country meet, so she was familiar with the Steeplechase course. In her previous three visits, Ellenburg hadn't cracked the top 20.

She wanted to make her senior run a good one, and had a plan.

Ellenburg broke from the pack of 175 runners right at the gun, put herself up front and stayed there.

"I tried to outpace the other people," Ellenburg said. "I'm not really a good sprinter at the end. I have to get my position at the beginning. I was hoping I would move up, but I got there and stayed. I'm happy with what I did."

Red Bank's Claire Turner won the race with a time of 19:46.20, followed by Barbara Lee of David Lipscomb in second and Ellenburg in third.

Bible wasn't far behind her teammate, covering the distance in a 20:56.20 to finish fifth.

West Greene's Macy Parham finished just outside the All-State qualifying mark of 15 with a 20th place finish at 22:04.02.

South Greene's Brittney Brown, running as an individual qualifier, placed 32nd at 22:30.70.

Greenville's Jillian Valk ran a 22:44.26 to place 37th.

West Greene's Sierra McIntosh finished 57th. Teammate Mary Ann Murphy was 70th, and Kristina Altman was 77th.

Chelsea Carpenter (GHS) placed 83rd. Macey Haire (WG) finished in 85th. Sherry Turner (WG) was 95th. Amanda Smith (GHS) was 120. Karli Marshall (WG) placed 141st. Courtney Patterson (GHS) finished in 145th.

In the boys' race, Jones led Greeneville with a time of 17:14.55 to place fifth. Cooper led the Knights with a time of 17:27.65 to place 10th. King ran a 17:41.30 for the Devils, placing 15th to round out the All-State finishers.

Dyersburg's Loren Newsom won the event, running a 16:37.85 to pace the field of 182.

The Black Knights finished fourth as a team thanks to a good group finish. Lawson Burrow placed 31st with an 18:17.13. Josiah Roberts was 33rd with an 18:22.21. Simeon Roberts was 36th with an 18:28.46.

Chuckey-Doak coach Beth Frye said she was pleased with the Black Knights' results.

"It's quite an accomplishment to finish fourth in the state," she said. "We are real proud of them."

Greeneville's Mark Edwards finished 57th. Teammate Atlas Fagundes was 65th.

Tyler Graybill (C-D) finished 75th. Jordan Mitchell (GHS) was 97th. Russell Schell (GHS) was 110th. George Blalock (GHS) was 146th. Kevin McAmis (C-D) was 157th. Gavin Long (C-D) finished 177th.

Greeneville coach Jeff Bloomer was pleased with not only his All-State runners, but Greeneville's team finishes as well.

"I couldn't be more proud of these kids," Bloomer said. "They've given their all. I couldn't ask for anything more. I'm just really proud of them."

East Tennessee was well represented at the state cross country meet.

University High's girls won their fifth consecutive Class A/AA team championship. Morristown West won the boys Class AAA team title.
