Senior guard Tyler Feezell saved Chuckey-Doak from a furious second half rally by Grainger by draining a 3-point goal with just two seconds left in the game to lift the Knights to a 50-48 Blue Ridge Athletic Conference victory Tuesday night at the Knights' gymnasium.
The Knights led most of the game, in front by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, but the Grizzlies staged a late rally that brought them to the brink of victory before Feezell made his clutch basket.
The win gave Chuckey-Doak a sweep of the twin-bill, as the Lady Knights were sharp in a 73-50 romp in the opener.
The Knights play at West Greene Friday, then return home to face South Greene on Saturday night.
BUZZER-BEATER
Things looked to be in pretty good shape for the Knights early in the game as they shot the ball well, ran their offense smoothly, limited turnovers and bolted to a 32-22 halftime edge.
But things changed in the third stanza. When Preston Moore got free inside for a layup mid way through the period, the Knights commanded a 36-25 advantage. But they never scored again the remainder of the third quarter and the Grizzlies got hot.
A 3-pointer followed by a regular basket from Rafael Jackson had Chuckey-Doak's lead down to 36-33 by the horn.
The Knights seemed to weather that storm as Moore hit a bucket and two free throws to start the final quarter and up the C-D lead to 40-33.
But Andy Farmer suddenly got hot, nailing three straight 3-pointers, the last one coming with 4:05 left that put Grainger in front at 42-40.
The rest of the way proved to be a battle. The Grizzlies eventually went up by four, 46-42, when Ryan Webster converted a pair of baskets, but with 1:16 left on the clock Jameson Painter swished in a clutch 3-pointer from the left corner to close the Knights to 46-45.
The Knights then applied the pressure on defense and got a turnover, and Clint Sexton battled inside for a layup with 30 seconds left that gave C-D a 47-46 lead. Grainger answered when Cody Glascock drove the lane and hit a floater, putting the Grizzlies up 48-47 with only 11 seconds left.
After a time out, Chuckey-Doak's Feezell raced into front court, and it first appeared his option was to pound the ball inside. When that was covered, he stepped back behind the 3-point line and sank the shot with the clock winding down. Grainger got a time out called with 1.3 seconds left, but couldn't get a shot off before the final horn sounded.
C-D got good scoring balance with Feezell, Moore and Painter all scoring 11 points. Sexton also hit double figures with 10 points and led the team on the boards with nine. They shot an even 50 percent from the field (20-40) to improve to 3-4 in the conference and 7-9 overall.
Grainger got a game-high 14 points from Farmer as the Grizzlies dropped to 1-6 in the league and 5-14 overall.
