Residents at Wellington Place of Greeneville were recently given an opportunity to learn more about several exotic creatures.
On Jan. 30, representatives of the Wild Kingdom pet store in Greeneville brought a variety of animals, which are indigenous to the continent of Africa, to visit with residents of the assisted-living facility.
The elderly residents were actually quite receptive to their slithery and crawly guests, said Tina Cyr, Wellington's sales and marketing manager.
"It was a very, very positive experience," she said.
"They were very curious about the animals ... and amazingly brave," Cyr added. "It was definitely something different for them to experience."
Several of the residents even decided to hold the snakes, the frog and the lizard, she said.
A tarantula and a scorpion were also brought to the family friendly event, which was called "Out of Africa."
Several of the residents' grandchildren were on hand for the special occasion and were also given an opportunity to hold and pet the various exotic animals.
The pet store representatives talked about the animals' origins and their individual instinctive behaviors, Cyr said.
All of the animals who were brought for the visit were non-venomous, Cyr stressed.
"We wanted to make sure that everyone was protected," she said.
To cap off the evening, Wellington Place staff members served African-themed fruits and drinks to those in attendance.
On Friday, Feb. 27, Cyr said that Wellington Place will be hosting another animal event, which is being called "Voyage to Atlantis."
Several sea creatures will be brought to the assisted-living facility for the residents to view.
Cyr said the public is also invited to attend this event, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.
