Icy County Roads

Cause A.M. Wrecks

A storm system will move across the region tonight and Friday, generating widespread rainfall that could lead to minor flooding on Friday in low-lying areas, the National Weather Service said.

Precipitation will remain as rain through Friday, and flooding is possible due to saturated ground from the recent snow and rain, a weather statement reported early this morning.

Colder air will move in on Friday night and Saturday, allowing showers to mix and change over to snow showers. Some accumulation is possible on Friday night and Saturday, the weather service said.

Weather problems of another kind occurred this morning as ice that formed on some county roads overnight resulted in at least two vehicular accidents early this morning.

The Greene County Sheriff's Department reported that ice on the Nolichucky River Bridge on the Asheville Highway caused two cars to go out of control about 6 a.m. with at least one of them striking a bridge railing.

A sheriff's deputy at the scene was heard to call by radio for the Tennessee Department of Transportation to bring salt to the bridge.

The deputy also was heard to report by radio two other cars had nearly wrecked on the bridge due to the ice while he was present.

In another ice-related incident, Deputy Sheriff Jimmy Willett, who was dispatching at the Sheriff's Department about 6:30 a.m. said that a portion of North Mohawk Road near the railroad tracks also was covered with ice this morning.

The Greene County Highway Department had been dispatched to bring salt, he said.

A tractor-trailer attempting to turn around had become stuck and a large tow truck was dispatched to assist the truck, Willett said.

No injuries were reported in either crash.

However, Greeneville police, at about 7 a.m., reported that an accident involving injuries had taken place at the intersection of the East Andrew Johnson Highway and Justis Drive. It was unclear if that accident was weather-related, police said.
