A Mosheim Volunteer Fire Department firefighter was taken to Laughlin Memorial Hospital early this morning after suffering heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation while battling a fire at an abandoned house in the Midway community.

Scott Allen, chief of the Mosheim Volunteer Fire Department, said about 6:45 a.m. today that firefighter Matthew McCamey was treated at Laughlin Memorial Hospital for about three hours before being released.

Chief Allen said McCamey was overcome by heat and smoke while helping fight a fire of undetermined origin at an abandoned house at 15 Third Street in Midway.

Firefighters from the Mosheim and Midway Volunteer Fire Departments had been dispatched to the fire about 1:30 a.m., according to Allen. He said firefighters remained on the scene until about 4:30 a.m.

The structure was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, Chief Allen said.

He noted that the Midway VFD sent three trucks and eight firefighters to the scene while the Mosheim VFD sent three trucks and 16 firefighters to the blaze.

The owner of the house had not been determined, Allen said. Electric power was not connected to the vacant house, although live power lines were connected to a power pole near the house.

In addition to the two fire departments, Greene County Sheriff's Sgt. Terry Rader, a Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services ambulance, a disaster services unit from the Greene County Chapter of the American Red Cross and a Greeneville Light & Power System crew responded to the fire, Allen said.
