A Greene County man was charged with multiple offenses by Deputy Sheriff Chuck Humphreys following a brief pursuit Thursday night in Greeneville.

According to arrest warrants, the pursuit that led to the charges against Chris A. Smith, 40, of 100A Blazer Lane, began when Humphreys attempted, about 10 p.m. Thursday, to stop a gold-colored Chevrolet at the corner of West Summer and Sunset Streets for having no tail lights.

After Humphreys activated the blue lights and siren of his patrol car, warrants said, the Chevrolet failed to stop and continued down Sunset Street.

The driver, later identified as Smith, eventually stopped near the intersection of Locust and Hardin Streets.

At that point, an arrest warrant said, Smith jumped from the car and attempted to flee on foot.

When Humphreys overtook Smith, he allegedly began fighting with Humphreys and had to be subdued with pepper spray, a resisting arrest warrant alleged.

Two "juvenile males" were in the car with Smith during the pursuit, according to arrest warrants. One of the two juveniles, who was identified as a 16-year-old, was found to be consuming alcohol that allegedly had been purchased for him by Smith.

Smith was charged with resisting arrest, violation of the implied consent law, felony evading arrest, felony reckless endangerment, driving on a revoked license (second offense), DUI (second offense) and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

His bond was set at $27,000. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance on the charges in General Sessions Court today.
