A Timbers East resident told Greeneville police on Tuesday that he had been the victim of an e-mail fraud this week in which he lost $1,600 from his bank account.
But according to a report by GPD Officer Jeff Sowers, the victim was able to recover his money after he contacted the company from which the e-mail message supposedly had been sent.
The victim told Officer Sowers that he had received an e-mail message that supposedly had been sent to him from http://absolutepoker.com (but actually had not), saying his account had been "deactivated."
When the victim replied to the e-mail, according to the police report, someone gained access to his private financial information and used it to remove $1,600 from his bank account.
But when the victim contacted http://absolutepoker.com , he was told several other people also had had their identities stolen in similar fashion. The company then refunded the victim's money, according to the police report.
