Five Hurt In 3-Vehicle Wreck

Sun Photo by Phil Gentry

Five people were injured in a three-vehicle wreck at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday at Snapps Ferry and Walkertown roads. Two persons were ejected from the van, which is shown on its side. One of them was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center. Officers said that van pulled into the path of the blue van, which was eastbound on the Snapps Ferry Road and was being driven by former County Commissioner Willie Good. The light-colored Ford van hit the dark Nissan Pathfinder, before going over the embankment and overturning, sheriff's deputies said.

Five people were injured, two of them seriously, in a three-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on Snapps Ferry Road at the intersection with Walkertown Road and Afton Road.

Sheriff's Department Lt. Wesley Holt stated in a report that a Ford Aerostar van driven by Christie Lee Looks, 35, of 724 W. Main St., pulled from Walkertown Road into the path of a Kia Sedona van being driven east on the Snapps Ferry Road by Willie C. Good, 84, of 15295 Kingsport Hwy., at 5:40 p.m. Good's wife, Shelby, was a passenger, as was their grandson, Isaac Good, 13, of 450 Clear Creek Road.

Looks was reported in "fair condition" this morning at Johnson City Medical Center.

Walkertown Road is the name of the road on the north side of the intersection; the road on the south side is Afton Road.

The report states that the impact caused the Ford van to strike a Nissan Pathfinder SUV driven by Connie Kay McKay, 55, who was stopped at the Stop sign on Afton Road.

The Ford van then went down an embankment and overturned, ejecting two passengers: Barbara Julian, 34, of 205 Sunburst Alley, and Chris Shipley, 30, of the same address. They were not wearing seat belts, Holt reported.

Another passenger, Jimmy Mercer, 26, was not ejected, according to the report

Shipley was flown by Wings helicopter ambulance to Johnson City Medical Center, where he was listed in "stable condition" Wednesday night, Holt said.

A JCMC spokesperson said Shipley was in "fair condition" this morning.

Holt said Julian, though ejected from the vehicle, "didn't have a scratch on her."

Looks was taken by Greene County/Greeneville Emergency Medical Service to Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Holt said.

The Goods did not appear to be seriously injured, according to the report.

Willie Good, a former Greene County commissioner, was recuperating at home this morning from injuries to his knee, a friend said.

His wife, Shelby, had a knot on her head and was also at home, and their grandson had several bruises, the friend said.

McKay was taken to Laughlin Hospital by private vehicle, according to the report.

In addition to the Sheriff's Department and the EMS, the Newsmanville Volunteer Fire Department and the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad responded to the accident scene.
