The late Dr. Don C. Henard was honored for his service to the community, and John D. Baxter, an active farmer and farm leader of Greenville, was honored for his service to agriculture during the annual Farm-City Banquet Thursday night at the Clyde Austin 4-H Training Center.

The banquet is an annual project of the Greene County Partnership's Agribusiness Committee.

Dr. Henard, who died earlier this year, was presented the Robert C. Austin Award for Distinguished Service to Community. His widow, Jean, accepted the award in his behalf.

John D. Baxter, a retired industrial engineer who is an active member and leader of the Greene County Farm Bureau, was presented the J.W. Massengill Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture.

In presenting the awards, Steve Hale, a member of the agribusiness committee, cited a long list of accomplishments for both Dr. Henard and Baxter.

Hale spoke of how Dr. Henard and his family returned to Greeneville in 2001 after Dr. Henard retired from his medical practice in Memphis.

Among Dr. Henard's service to the community, Hale pointed out, was serving as chairman of the Greeneville-Greene County Airport Authority and as chairman of the board of directors of the Greene County Partnership.

Hale noted that Dr. Henard was a member of the Tusculum College Board of Trustees as well as being a trustee for the Greeneville City Schools Foundation.

Dr. Henard also was a member of the board of directors of the Niswonger Foundation, the board of trustees of the Laughlin Memorial Hospital Foundation, and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

"Dr. Henard did all that since moving back to Greeneville in 2001," Hale said.

A life-long farmer, John D. Baxter was an industrial engineer at the former Weavex Corporation for 36 years, Hale said.

"He has served as vice president of the Greene County Farm Bureau for 11 years," Hale said, "and has been instrumental in the start-up of branch offices."

Baxter is a member of the Young Farmers and Homemakers of Greene County, the agribusiness committee, and serves on the Andrew Johnson Bank's Agricultural Board.

Baxter attended the National 4-H Congress as a teenager, and formerly co-owned and operated a farm supply store in Greeneville.

"Mr. Baxter has been involved in Kids' Day on the Farm, and co-chairs the Farm-City Banquet," Hale said.

Baxter is also a member of the Army National Guard and the New Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he is a Sunday School teacher and serves on the building committee.

Nikki Land, of Mohawk, who is studying agricultural business and economics at the University of Tennessee, presented her travelogue on this summer's visit to Costa Rica. She and 47 other young people from across the U.S. went to Costa Rica after being named winners in the National Poultry Proficiency Program Contest.

This fall, Land has been traveling to various states as part of UT's Livestock Judging Team.

She is a partner with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry McNabb, in a poultry, beef and tobacco farming operation off Fish Hatchery Road in western Greene County.
