A Chuckey man who was injured in a Monday night accident in eastern Greene County died after being flown to the Johnson City Medical Center.

An accident report filed by Deputy Sheriff Jimmy Willett identified the man as Travis P. Shelton, 33, of Donald Broyles Road.

Shelton was driving a 1991 Ford pickup truck west on Donald Broyles Road about three-tenths of a mile from Horse Creek Park Road when he lost control of the vehicle as it entered a curve, Willett's report said.

The truck then traveled off the right side of the road and struck a large tree head-on, according to the report.

After being removed from the truck, Shelton was transported by a Greeneville-Greene County Emergency Medical Services ambulance to a landing zone that had been established at the intersection of Broyles Road and Horse Creek Park Road by firefighters from the Nolichuckey Volunteer Fire Department from Washington County.

Shelton was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Deputy Willett's report.

Kevin Ayers, of the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad, said eight Rescue Squad volunteers responded to the accident and participated in a search for a possible second accident victim at the scene.

However, Ayers said that while the search was in progress, Rescue Squad personnel learned that a man originally believed to have been with Shelton had not actually been in the truck.
