A three-year-old boy was injured Saturday morning when he apparently was backed over by a sport-utility vehicle at a Cherokee Boulevard residence.

The boy's name was not available this morning, according to Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services Director Robert Sayne.

However, Sayne said the child was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center by a Wings Air Rescue helicopter after being freed from beneath the vehicle.

Sayne said the boy suffered no broken bones in the incident, but did require surgery for an injury to one of his ears.

Kevin Ayers, the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad's first lieutenant, said seven Rescue Squad members responded about 10:55 a.m. Saturday to a dispatch from Greene County 911 that a three-year-old was trapped beneath a sport utility vehicle at a Cherokee Boulevard residence.

Firefighters from the Mosheim Volunteer Fire Department also responded.

On arrival, Ayers said, emergency personnel found the child beneath the SUV with one of his legs trapped between the vehicle's drive shaft and its fuel tank.

Rescue Squad members used a "manual spreader" to force the fuel tank away from the boy's leg so that he could be safely removed from beneath the vehicle.

The boy then was treated at the scene by Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services personnel before being flown to the Johnson City Medical Center by a Wings Air Rescue helicopter.

A spokesman for the Greene County Sheriff's Department said on Saturday that the department did not investigate the incident and did not file a report.

This morning, a Greene County-Greeneville EMS supervisor said he understood that the boy might be released from the hospital today.
