Two persons were injured this morning in multiple wrecks involving a total of 13 vehicles in the Pecan Ridge area of West Andrew Johnson Highway (U.S.11E).
Blinding sunlight caused a total of five wrecks in the eastbound lanes at around 7:30 a.m., near the Mosheim Post Office.
Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Guinn said he received a call about the first wreck at 7:26 a.m.
"Then it just became a chain reaction after that," Deputy Guinn said.
Two of the wrecks resulted in minor injuries, he said.
A juvenile passenger and an adult driver were transported by Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Guinn said.
SERIES OF WRECKS
Names of the accident victims were unavailable at press time.
The wrecks, according to Guinn, included:
* a three-vehicle accident at the highway's intersection with Forest Road;
* a four-vehicle accident about 100 feet away from the intersection;
* two separate two-vehicle accidents near the four-vehicle accident; and
* a two-vehicle accident at the top of the hill.
Guinn said the wrecks were caused by blinding sunlight coming over the horizon, which caused "zero visibility."
Following the accidents, traffic was backed up to the highway's intersection with Blue Springs Parkway, the deputy said.
In addition to the Sheriff's Department and EMS, the Mosheim Volunteer Fire Department responded to the wrecks.
