A Bulls Gap pharmacy was robbed by a man armed with a handgun about noon Tuesday, according to a spokesman for Hawkins County Central Dispatch.

A dispatcher said on Tuesday afternoon that Hawkins County Sheriff's Department patrol officers and detectives had responded to Cunningham Drugs on U.S. 11E in Bulls Gap.

During the robbery, the dispatcher said, a lone male suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and drugs from the pharmacy after displaying a handgun.

The suspect was described as a tall man who was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and "some type of hat" at the time of the robbery.

On Tuesday afternoon, sheriff's detectives reviewed surveillance video from the pharmacy in the hope of seeing which way the suspect fled and what type of vehicle he used to approach and leave the pharmacy, according to Hawkins County Central Dispatch.

No Additional Information

This morning, neither Hawkins County Sheriff Roger Christian, nor any of his investigators, were available to comment about the investigation, according to a spokesman for the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department.

Bulls Gap, which does not have a police department, relies on the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department for police protection.

Earlier Robbery

The same pharmacy had been robbed in August 2004 by two armed men.

During the 2004 robbery the two suspects fled in a customer's red 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit convertible after forcing the customer to give them the keys to the car.

Witnesses, Deputy Sheriff Jeff Caudill said, later reported seeing a similar car on Oasis Road in Greene County and in the Guthries Greene Road area at the Greene County-Hawkins County line.

At the pharmacy after the robbery, a customer who had been visiting the store's owner when the robbery took place, said the two suspects had ordered him, the owner and two pharmacy employees to the floor during the robbery.

The robbers fled in the customer's car with drugs, including OxyContin. Those who committed the 2004 robbery were never caught.
