The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site will host a special Fourth of July program, "Stars and Stripes: What Every American Should Know About Their Flag," on Sunday, July 5.

The event will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. The program will honor both our flag and nation's birthday, according to Park Superintendent Lizzie Watts.

"The program on Flag Day was so well received by the public (last year) that it has been requested that we present it again. The 4th of July celebration offers a wonderful opportunity to discuss both the symbolism behind our flag and the origins of Independence Day," Watts said.

The program will explore the origin and history of Independence Day, including customs and traditions. In addition, the stories behind several of our iconic national symbols will be relayed, including the Liberty Bell, "Uncle Sam," the Statue of Liberty, and of course, the U.S. flag.

The park encourages those of all ages, especially Scouts and other youngsters, to attend.

The program will last approximately 30 minutes and be held at the gazebo just inside the main gate of the National Cemetery on Monument Avenue.

Parking signs will direct those attending to available space. For more information, please contact the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site Visitor Center at (423) 638-3551.
